The sport of cycling is picking up speed throughout the state.

"A lot of races, locally, are getting bigger every year. There's been races in Rochester, Ithaca, Binghamton, Albany," said Marcello Prattico, race director.                                                                      Click image for video

Race weekend in Syracuse is no different. More than 300 professional and amateur bicycle racers came out for the competition.

"We've been coming to do this race for the last couple of years. It's one of the premier races, early season races, in New York State," said cyclist Michael Tacci.

The course runs from Song Mountain, through Preble, Otisco Lake, and Tully, with the longest race being 87 miles long. While a lot of that terrain is flat, riders will face a very steep climb out of Otisco Valley.

"Probably my strength. I'm better at hills than flats," said cyclist Todd Heath.

"I'm actually not the best climber, I prefer a flat course," said cyclist Eric Schillinger.

"As long as you're in the front and prepared to suffer a little while. You'll get through it okay," said cyclist Sarah Krzysiak.

The riders pushed through the hills and the valleys in about three-and-a-half hours. For many, it wasn't about the glory, but rather the love of the sport.

"If my team does well, then I'm perfectly happy. And where I place is sort of secondary," said cyclist Scott Klion.
